Abstract
Institutional theory is one of the most popular organizational theories for understanding organizations and individuals within organizations. It explains how institutions—either created by an individual or, consciously or unconsciously, by a group of people—influence and shape individuals’ and organizations’ behaviors and set the rules of the game. It defines limits for organizations’ and individuals’ actions and subsequently shape them. It has enforcement power. This can be in soft or hard forms, and can be administered by an individual or to a group. Consequently, the institutional framework identifies limits and the desired way of behavior for which compliance is expected from both organizations and individuals.
