Abstract

The conversation about wealth, of all kinds, might give the reader the impression that wealth generation was the end goal of many associated with the AO Foundation. Far from it. As an organization, the AO itself profited from accumulated financial wealth, but always remained dedicated to improving patient lives. Since this wealth was accrued without direct compensation to those who delivered its mission, the AO Foundation qualifies as a social entrepreneurial enterprise; social with regards to its mission and its status as a non-profit organization. Since the AO undertakes surgical development, combined with an immense educational effort that requires considerable management skills, it is also an enterprise. The AO is more than an association, not just a debating club of surgeons, but an organization that undertakes a daunting endeavor to improve fracture care globally.
