Abstract
Some of the early AO-affiliated surgeons and entrepreneurs were animal lovers and owned both small and large animals, particularly horses. Among those, two stand out. First, there was August ‘Urs’ Guggenbühl (1918–2009), a member of the G13 and chief surgeon of the regional hospital in Grenchen from 1957 to 1983. The Hospital Grenchen was also the place where Maurice Müller first took Robert Mathys, Sr. to observe surgeries. ‘Guggi,’ as his friends called him, had previously trained under Willenegger in Liestal, was a recognized dog lover and known to drive around with his many large dogs in the backseat of his Jaguar convertible. Disappointed with his local veterinarian’s surgical skills for dogs, he had set out on his own to teach AO surgical techniques to this veterinarian, at times even carrying out the surgeries himself.
