Abstract

This chapter offers a discussion of the political developments in Iraqi Kurdistan. Since the early 1960s, the Kurdish national movement has been active and despite the challenges and setbacks it faced, it managed to establish itself as an important political actor in the domestic politics of Iraq. This chapter first provides an account of the evolution of the Kurdish conflict in Iraq before proceeding to discuss the establishment of Kurdish de facto autonomy in 1991 and its subsequent consolidation in 2005. Although significant progress has been made in the accommodation of Kurdish rights in Iraq, there remain significant barriers to Kurdish aspirations and the challenges that the Kurds of Iraq face is the final issue discussed in this chapter.
