Abstract
Through this chapter, (trans)gender identities, roles and values are discussed through several literary works from the interwar Yugoslavia. Feminist theories that have already grappled with the dominant narratives about sex and gender are used for close reading and new understandings of literary examples written at the edge of social, cultural and political acceptance. Chosen as unknown or less known literary examples, these feminist and queer novels point to transgression of gender and sex roles regardless of whether the writers are male or female. At the same time, this chapter uncovers some of forgotten interwar Yugoslav female, male or transgender authors who were ahead of their time.
