Abstract

There are two major clinical presentations of the metabolic myopathies: one is fixed, usually slowly progressive weakness; the other corresponds exactly to the main theme of this symposium, exercise intolerance, muscle contracture and pain. We will confine our review to recent developments in this second group of disorders. Although acute muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) with myoglobinuria is not explicitly mentioned in the title of the book, in fact most, if not all, of the metabolic myopathies under consideration can cause myoglobinuria and are listed in Table 1.
