Evolution of Laparoscopic Ventral Hernia Repair

Abstract

The concept of the posterior repair of abdominal wall hernias had its earliest beginnings in 1871 when Marcy (1) noted that the closure of the internal inguinal ring could accomplish the repair of an indirect inguinal hernia. He later reported the intra-abdominal approach of this repair during a laparotomy for another purpose (2). One year earlier, Tait described the use of a laparotomy to repair inguinal hernias (3). These repairs all approached the inguinal floor from inside the abdominal cavity. Because of the morbidity of this approach to this problem, the interest in this method of repair was never very great.
