Abstract

One of the problems associated with laparoscopic repair of ventral hernias is the need to perform proper release of adhesions in order to adequately identify the hernia defect and repair it by placing a mesh intraperitoneally. This adhesiolysis process is a major issue as it is sometimes the source of serious complications for the patient. Included among these is the appearance of missed perforations of the intestinal wall during the postoperative period, a potentially life-threatening situation (1). This complication will require another operation to suture the perforation or performance of an ostomy. Additionally the mesh implanted will have to be removed, increasing the possibility of recurrence of the original hernia. Hence the importance of this chapter, since we consider adhesiolysis to be a key component of laparoscopic ventral hernia surgery. Because of the potentially disastrous consequences for the patient, it is important to discuss the proper performance of the adhesiolysis process and to take into consideration the necessary precautions and management of possible complications that may arise.
