Comme nous avons commencé ce livre avec les premiers articles de Paul Erdős en théorie des nombres, nous le terminons en discutant de ce qui sera probablement considéré comme son héritage le plus durable, l’introduction, avec Alfred Rényi, de la méthode probabiliste. La void énoncée de la manière la plus simple:
Si, dans un ensemble donné d’objets, la probabilité pour qu’un objet n’admette pas une certaine propriété est strictement inférieure à 1, alors il doit exister un objet admettant cette propriété.
