Résumé
En 1666, Newton décrivait l’existence d’un rayonnement au-delà du spectre visible, à côté du rouge. En 1800, Sir William Herschel le mettait en évidence dans le rayonnement solaire dispersé par un prisme, en mesurant l’augmentation de la température. Après la formulation d’Ampère, en 1836, du principe de l’origine vibratoire commune de la lumière visible et invisible, en 1847, Fizeau et Foucault déterminaient les longueurs d’onde du rayonnement infrarouge (IR) à l’aide d’expériences d’interférence.
