Résumé

L’expectoration de sang provenant du tractus respiratoire inférieur définit l’hémoptysie. Il faut distinguer «l’hémoptysie-symptôme» (pertes sanguines réduites ou modérées pouvant s’étaler sur plusieurs jours) et «l’hémoptysie-maladie», qui peut mettre en jeu le pronostic vital, correspondant soit à des hémoptysies modérées mais récidivantes, soit à des hémoptysies massives (selon les auteurs plus de 100, ou plus 400 mL par jour). Le risque vital dépend non pas tant des pertes sanguines que de l’asphyxie correspondant à l’accumulation de sang dans les espaces alvéolaires.
