L’accessibilité du canal anal en a fait une région très tôt explorée dès la période de l’Empire égyptien avec les papyrus d’Ebers, de Berlin et d’Edwin Smith. À l’époque, le traitement était essentiellement médical, fait de pansements locaux (lin enduit plaçé dans l’anus, lavements). Les Égyptiens utilisaient surtout la bière, le miel, le lait, l’huile et l’eau. Le traitement chirurgical n’est encore pas évoqué.
