Abstrait
Chez la personne âgée, qu’elle soit à domicile, en insti- tution ou hospitalisée, de nombreuses situations et/ou pathologies peuvent provoquer une diminution de l’alimentation orale ou une augmentation des besoins nutritionnels insuffisamment compensée par les apports. En l’absence de prise en charge nutritionnelle adaptée, ceci peut rapidement entraîner une dénutrition plus ou moins sévère. En l’absence de contre-indication, chez un sujet âgé conscient, sans risque d’inhalation, ayant des fonctions digestives normales ou peu altérées, tous les efforts doivent être entrepris pour encourager, maintenir ou rétablir l’alimentation orale. Dans cette optique, en prévention ou en traitement de la dénutrition, les compléments nutritionnels oraux (CNO) ont toute leur place. Ils représentent avec les conseils nutritionnels et l’alimentation orale enrichie la première étape de la prise en charge.
