Abstract
Since 1979, several papers have been published on the use of satellite data to detect volcanic eruptions and their ash clouds. Eruptions documented include: Augustine, Alaska, 1976 (Kienle and Shaw, 1979); Soufrière, St. Vincent, 1979 (Krueger, 1982); Alaid, U.S.S.R., and Pagan, Marianna Island, both in 1981 (Sawada, 1983); el Chichón, Mexico, 1982 (Matson, 1984); and Galunggung, Indonesia, 1982 (Hanstrum and Watson, 1983). The El Chichón event is used here to show how eruptions can be monitored with meteorological satellite data.
