Abstract
There are at least three main areas of active research in the region of the atmosphere directly accessible only to sounding rockets: interactions between the motions of the neutral atmosphere and the ionized portion; interactions, both by dynamic processes and by radiative transfer, between the upper and lower atmosphere; and refinement of indirect probing techniques which can be used to study this region from the ground or from satellites. Recent advances in these subjects have interesting practical implications as well as adding to our still incomplete knowledge of this part of the “fringe of space.”
