Abstract

Insulin secretagogues such as sulphonylureas cause insulin release irrespective of the prevailing glucose concentration. Enhancing insulin secretion through a glucose-dependent mechanism is an attractive, novel therapeutic approach that can circumvent some of the unwanted effects of sulphonylureas—principally weight gain and hypoglycaemia.
