Abstract
So far we have restricted ourselves to the Solar System in our search for extraterrestrial life. In the remaining chapters we look much further afield. We shall focus almost entirely on our Galaxy, and in the main on the nearby regions — the difficulties of finding potential and actual habitats increase the more distant the target because generally the light we receive from them is then more feeble.
