Abstract

While open prostatectomy is routinely performed in the extraperitoneal space, the newer methods of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) and robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) are instead more commonly performed transabdominally. The familiar laparoscopic transperitoneal anatomy and larger working area have made it the preferred approach for the majority of surgeons performing these procedures laparoscopically or using robot assistance. Herein the procedure and the arguments for the extraperitoneal robot-assisted radical prostatectomy technique, which has been my preferred approach in nearly 2,000 cases, are presented.
