Abstract
One of the driving forces behind the development of laparoscopy has always been to decrease the morbidity of a laparotomy incision. The evolution from open surgery to laparoscopy was the initial and most dramatic step in this progression. Mini-laparoscopy, whereby the size of each laparoscopic instrument was decreased to the limits of useful instrumentation, was thought to be the next natural evolution in accomplishing this goal. By developing the smallest tools possible to safely and effectively perform surgery, and if each access point creates pain and potential complications, one might limit the trauma inherent to a given operation by miniaturizing each access point.
