Abstract
Hyponatremia reflects an abnormal ratio of sodium to water and is defined as a serum sodium less than 135 mmol/L. Mild to moderate hyponatremia (serum sodium 128–134 mmol/L) is seen in 20 to 30% of hospital inpatients. Severe hyponatremia (serum sodium less than 120 mmol/L) is seen in only 2 to 5% of hyponatremic patients.
