Meningiomas: Imaging Mimics

  • Chapter

Making a correct neuroradiologic diagnosis is a process akin to assemblying a puzzle. Pieces of the puzzle include: patient's age, sex, presenting signs/symptoms, anatomic location, attenuation coefficient (computed tomography [CT]), signal intensity (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]), and enhancement pattern (CT/MR/angiography). Meningiomas have characteristic imaging features and sites of origin, making diagnosis straightforward in most cases. However, meningiomas can be mimicked by other intracranial tumors and pseudo-tumors [1]. We present a discussion of “meningioma mimics” with emphasis on CT and MRI features.
