Abstract

Heart failure (HF) is becoming a major health problem in developing and already-developed countries that requires more investment in human and physical resources. Taking Brazil, the largest country in Latin America, as representative of the continent, cardiovascular diseases are responsible for almost 30% of annual deaths. It is estimated that one third of these deaths are due to HF. These data are relevant, since they demonstrate that this syndrome is one of the main causes of death in this part of the world and consequently demand more attention from the medical community and public health authorities1.
