Will Musculoskeletal Medicine Work?

  • John K. Paterson

Vertebral manipulation lies at the heart of musculoskeletal medicine. Indeed, I wonder why the term manual medicine has been so widely dropped? Perhaps some felt it was in some way degrading for a professional — rather akin to manual labour. At least it suggested the most likely approach to the patient’s problem — primarily by the use of the hands. Either way, many musculoskeletal patients expect manipulation as a first choice of therapy, and, not unreasonably, they want to know whether it is going to work. This expectation is enhanced by today’s trend toward evidence-based medicine.
