Abstract

This chapter is the “owner’s manual” part of this book. You might study the physics of dynamic equilibrium, but that does not teach you how to ride a bike. So after months or even years of study and planning, you might know plenty about EMRs, but until you are in the driver’s seat, you really will not know much about how to use them. You will need to know which circumstances are good to use them, which are not, how they function, what the rules of the road are, how to take care of them, and even how to make them better.

The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence; it is to act with yesterday’s logic.

– Peter Drucker, management consultant and writer

Acknowledgment

I would like to acknowledge Sabrina Townsend, RN, Clinical Information Specialist, who gave me very helpful commentary on the early outlines of this chapter. I also want to thank my wife and children, who have borne the brunt of my many late-night meetings and distracted thoughts. Finally, I would like to apologize for the tangle of metaphors, analogies, and wise cracks – it is just how I explain things.
