Abstract
The differential diagnosis of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy is broad, encompassing a variety of disorders affecting the motor unit. Primary muscle disorders that must be considered include congenital myopathy, hereditary metabolic disorders, and muscular dystrophy. Secondary muscle disorders include those associated with collagen vascular disease or malignancy or due to infection, drugs, or toxins. Disorders of the neuromuscular junction, such as myasthenia gravis, and anterior horn cell disease may also present as proximal muscle weakness.
