Summary
Saliva serves a variety of important functions, many of which are not appreciated until salivary flow decreases. A wide spectrum of pathologic conditions, including inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic, affect the major and minor salivary glands, resulting in potentially significant morbidity and diminished quality of life for the patient. This chapter provides a review of conditions affecting the salivary glands, with attention to the more common entities that are likely to be encountered in clinical practice along with relevant practical treatment guidelines.
