Intracranial Renal Cell Cancer Metastasis

  • Chapter
Clinical Management of Renal Tumors

Abstract

Metastasis to the brain occurs in 5–10% of patients with renal cell carcinoma. Patients often present with localizing neurological signs or seizures. Increasingly, however, asymptomatic metastases are detected as oncologists are ordering more screening magnetic resonance and computed tomographic scans in renal cell carcinoma patients. The treatment for brain metastases from renal cell carcinoma includes whole brain radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and surgical resection. Aggressive local treatment of renal cell carcinoma metastasis typically produces long periods of palliation if systemic disease can be controlled.
