Abstract

A subset of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are not responsive to medication or psychological/behavioral therapies. After other avenues of treatment have been attempted, neurosurgery, including deep brain stimulation (DBS), has been used as a treatment for the most severe and refractory patients. In this chapter, we will review the therapeutic use of DBS for OCD and MDD, discussing its history, current practice, results from clinical and translational research, clinical indications, and safety issues relevant to this technique.
