Abstract

The use of mesh prostheses for repair of abdominal wall hernias has become commonplace over the last 15 years. Chapter 12 highlights this fact and provides many useful tips and guidelines for the management of patients who either have mesh implants or who are being considered for prosthetic repair. Several reasons exist for the now widespread use of mesh in hernia repairs of all types. These include (a) reduced hernia recurrence rates associated with a tension-free mesh repair technique, (b) more rapid return to unrestricted physical activity after tension-free mesh repair, (c) the wide variety and quality of mesh products now available, and (d) the overall safety and low complication rates associated with mesh prostheses. In this counterpoint, I review and emphasize many of the salient aspects regarding mesh hernia repairs, as already addressed in Chapter 12, and provide additional perspective based on my experience and clinical practice and review of the available literature.
