Age-Related Changes in the Cardiovascular System

  • Chapter
Hypertension in the Elderly

Abstract

According to the US Census Bureau, the proportion of people in the United States over the age of 65 years is increasing. Current estimates indicate that approximately 30 to 35 million people are 65 years of age or older. In the year 2030, it is estimated that there will be approximately 55 to 60 million people in this age category. This aspect of our population has an important impact on the understanding of cardiovascular disease (CVD) because it is known that advancing age confers the major risk. The incidence and prevalence of CVD increases dramatically with advancing age in both men and women.
