Abstract
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a leading cause of hospital admissions in the United States (1). Heart failure affects over 400,000 people in the United States each year and accounts for a 1-yr mortality rate of 60% in this population (2,3). When maximal medical therapy is insufficient in stabilizing myocardial function and surgical options fail or do not exist, heart transplantation is the final recourse. Because a limited donor organ pool exists, with only 2500 heart transplants in the United States each year (4), priority is given to patients with limited life expectancy and no medical or surgical alternatives.
