Abstract
The earliest bacterial fossil dates back about 3 billion years. This was a simpler time! Communications between cells were more modest than those required to maintain a multicellular organism and were probably focused on the ability to signal the presence of beneficial substances (food) or deleterious substances (toxins) in the local environment.
