Abstract

In all of the major sensory pathways of the mammalian brain, the sensory receptor sheets (the retina, body surface, and cochlea) are represented in an orderly and topographic manner at each synaptic relay or nucleus. This pattern is manifested early in ontogeny (for the auditory midbrain, see Chapter 9) and has been demonstrated in numerous species, from amphibia to primates.
