Abstract
It is estimated that 4.8 million Americans carry the diagnosis of heart failure. As nearly 600,000 new cases are diagnosed every year, it is the leading cause of hospitalizations in patients over 65 years of age (1) and a significant source of health care expenditures (2). The incidence of heart failure doubles with every decade of life (3). With the aging of the general population and enhanced survival afforded by modern medical treatment, the incidence of heart failure is increasing (4).
