Abstract

Antibodies directed specifically against cytokeratin 20 (CK20) were first reported in 1992 (1). Cytokeratin 20 is a low molecular weight keratin, an intermediate filament restricted to gastrointestinal and urothelial epithelium, and Merkel cells (2). The initial antibodies worked only on frozen tissue specimens and thus had limited diagnostic utility. Subsequent antibodies that recognize epitopes that survive formalin fixation and paraffin embedding have been developed, increasing the functionality of anti-CK20 antibodies as a diagnostic tool.
