Animal Models of Autoimmune Myocarditis

  • Chapter
Myocarditis

Abstract

Myocarditis is defined pathologically as an inflammation of the heart muscle. There are 2 major challenges in the field of myocarditis. One is that patients with severe forms of myocarditis die from refractory heart failure because treatment of acute myocarditis is often ineffective. The other is that some of the patients who survive the active phase develop dilated cardiomyopathy. A chronic, autoimmune-mediated myocardial injury is involved in the mechanism of dilated cardiomyopathy. To clarify the pathogenesis of myocarditis and postmyocarditis dilated cardiomyopathy, viral and autoimmune animal models have been developed. In this chapter, we review the models of experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM).
