Lupus Erythematosus

The Role of Adhesion Molecules and Local Mediators

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Current Inflammation Research ((CIRES))

Abstract

Inflammation in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is mediated by a complex interaction of the cellular and humoral components of the immune system. Central to the development of tissue injury is an interaction between inflammatory cells and vascular endothelium, which requires the recruitment, activation, and ligation of surface adhesion molecules. These events, induced by immune complexes, cytokines, and complement components are prerequisite for leukocyte egress and local mediator production. This chapter will review mediators that act on inflammatory and endothelial cells to promote vascular injury in SLE.
