Abstract
Acute myelogenous leukemias (AML) are aggressive hematologic neoplasms that requires urgent treatment. Despite intensive treatment with cytostatic drugs, only a minority of patients can be cured at present. In adults, about 80% of all acute leukemias belong to the group of AML. The term “acute nonlymphocytic leukemia” is often used in an identical fashion for AML. The incidence of AML is about two to four new cases/100,000 persons. AML is rare in children and young adults; the incidence of AML increases with advancing age, the age median being around 60–70 yr.
