Abstract
Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), often referred to as molecular cytogenetics, is currently recognized as a reliable technique and an alternative to classic cytogenetics (karyotyping), with many applications for detecting chromosomal abnormalities. The technique can analyze interphase nuclei of resting cells or metaphase spreads of mitotic cells. In addition, specific protocols for karyotyping analysis combine FISH with classic cytogenetics.
