Factors Affecting the Incidence of Tuberculosis and Measures for Control and Prevention

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

This chapter describes different classes of factors that can affect an individual’s susceptibility to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the resulting infection and severity. These factors include socioeconomic factors such as gender, age, quality of life, poverty, and close contacts with a tuberculosis (TB) patient with active infection. They also include behavioral factors such as smoking and alcohol abuses and health factors that weaken the host immune system such as malnutrition, diabetes, silicosis, and co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus. In addition, strategies for prevention and control of these risk factors are discussed.
