Anesthesia and Perioperative Care for Organ Transplantation

Abstract

As survival following thoracic organ transplantation improves, anesthesiologists are increasingly likely to see transplant recipients presenting for noncardiac surgery. Therefore, anesthesiologists and surgeons need a basic knowledge of the physiologic changes that occur in the immediate postoperative period and years following thoracic organ transplantation. During the preoperative workup period, it is advantageous for dedicated transplant teams to be involved in discussions regarding these patients; however, this is not always possible because of time constraints. Therefore, general anesthesiologists must be prepared to manage transplant recipients.
