Thyroid Cancer

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to summarize the available recommendations and to compare and contrast guidelines for management of thyroid nodules including those published by the European Thyroid Association (ETA) in 2006, the British Thyroid Association (BTA) in 2007, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 2008, the American Thyroid Association (ATA) in 2009, the Latin American Thyroid Society (LATS) in 2009, the French Thyroid Association (FTA) in 2011, and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines in 2011.

There is consensus regarding the majority of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients with thyroid nodules. There are few areas of disagreement, such as indications for scintigraphy or universal screening with calcitonin (CT). Finally, there are clinically relevant areas of uncertainty such as the routine application of molecular diagnostics for the risk stratification of indeterminate nodules, which remain to be addressed by further research and clinical experience.
