Abstract

We designed the academic interventions of the Challenging Horizons Program (CHP) to target the executive functioning deficits associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), including memory deficits, disorganization, and difficulty setting and keeping long-term goals. Thus, we use interventions that map directly onto these deficit areas and reward progress in each area through behavioral point systems, performance feedback, and praise. First, we introduce study skills (e.g., flash cards), mnemonic strategies (i.e., initial letter strategies), and note-taking strategies early in our treatment protocol to address the memory deficits associated with the disorder. Second, we construct organization checklists to address the issues of disorganization across several domains, including bookbags, binders, and lockers. Third, we target assignment tracking because students with ADHD often overestimate their ability to remember assignments and are subsequently unable to manage long-term projects. In this chapter, we describe these interventions in detail and offer readers the materials necessary to integrate these interventions in their work with adolescents with ADHD.
