Abstract

Intestinal failure can be defined as the critical reduction of functional gut mass below the minimal length and functionality necessary for adequate digestion and absorption to satisfy body nutrient and fluid requirements in adults or children. Intestinal failure itself is a general term used in combination with short bowel syndrome which is characterized by a state of malabsorption following extensive resection of the small bowel. Small bowel transplantation is transplantation of an intestinal allograft for the purpose of restoring intestinal function in patients with irreversible intestinal failure. Latest developments in immunosuppression, infection control, and surgical techniques rendered small bowel transplantation a plausible option for intestinal failure. This chapter tries to give an insight into the current state of small bowel transplantation.
