Abstract
One of the earliest forms of liquids addition practiced by landfill operators was surface addition. Techniques include: direct wetting of the waste, spray or drip irrigation, and ponding. In contract to subsurface liquid addition systems, construction requirements for surface systems are minimal. Care must be taken to ensure that liquids do not migrate outside of the controlled landfill area. The different configurations of surface systems are presented and discussed, along with design approaches that can be used to identify liquids addition amounts in light of the site’s moisture addition goals.
