Medial Collateral Ligament Injuries of the Knee

Abstract

Although most medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries do not require repair or reconstruction, there are some that do. These include some multiple ligament injuries, entrapment of the ligament in the joint, and some distal injuries. If the ligament is robust, it can be repaired primarily; however, if the ligament is significantly damaged, or in a chronic injury, a reconstruction can be carried out with a free soft tissue graft or with a semitendinosus graft that is left attached distally (modified Bosworth technique). This chapter details all of these options.
