Abstract
In the USA, the anesthesia practice is to discard the breathing circuits after their use in one patient. This is opposite to the practice in Europe. Here they do not discard the breathing circuits between patients, but only the anesthesia filter that is situated between the anesthesia machine and the patient breathing circuit.
We asked the following clinical research question:
Does the use of a breathing circuit filter prevent the necessity to discard breathing circuits after one use?
We thought this could be a good idea to attempt to introduce the European practice into the USA. Our main thrust was to reduce the landfill.
