Abstract
You have read an original article published in a respected journal [1]. You and your colleagues find the title misleading as it infers that only one parameter (low tidal volumes) can improve patient outcome following intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV).
You decide to write a letter to the editor which is summarized below:
In the study [1], in ventilated ICU patients, there were two interventional groups. Group 1 used only high tidal volumes during intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV), while group 2 used lower tidal volume but also included positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and a lung recruitment maneuver (periodic hyperinflation of the lungs) every 30 min.
