Abstract
Fibromyalgia is a chronic widespread pain condition affecting 2–5 % of the adult population. It is often seen in outpatient practice. Fibromyalgia is a clinical diagnosis based on signs and symptoms. Classically it presents with widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance. For some patients this could be a debilitating disorder affecting quality of life and social participation. Though historically there had been much debate about the validity of fibromyalgia as a “true” medical condition, recent research shows evidence of aberrant pain processing in fibromyalgia patients. This chapter will cover how to diagnose, work up, and manage this condition.
