This chapter begins with a discussion of normal sleep and the stages of sleep. The importance of circadian rhythms and the normal sleep cycle follows with a discussion of the effect of light on the suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus and pineal gland. This chapter then discusses insomnia and general disturbances of sleep, obstructive sleep apnea and chronic headaches, narcolepsy and cataplexy, and restless leg syndrome with attention to their pathophysiology, major clinical features, major laboratory findings, and principles of management and prognosis.
